Narrative:: This is an overnight paddle from Puget Island (in the Columbia RIver) to Wallace Island on June 20 and 21st.

On June 20th, we will park our vehicles at Slow Boat Farm, You can opt to arrive that morning, or camp at Slow Boat the evening before. We will launch at 10:00 am from their access point to the Columbia - you will need kayak wheels for the short distance to the launch. We will then paddle upriver (roughly east) to Wallace Island. The distance is roughly 4 miles one way.

Wallace Island does not have facilities or water so everyone will need to bring at least two gallons of water (one gallon per person per day) . Wallace island is primitive Leave No Trace Camping. Be prepared to camp overnight without electricity. We will pack out our shit - plans will be made for this after sign-up.

The next morning (Sunday, June 21st), we will pack up, eat breakfast, then paddle west along the Columbia River back to Puget Island and Slow Boat Farms. We’ll arrive at Slow Boat Farms early afternoon and head home.

Slow boat farms is located at 424 E Birnie Slough Rd, Cathlamet, WA 98612-9743

Activity Title:: Shad fishing at Coon Island
    Date of Activity:: 6/22/2026
Narrative:: Let's go fishing from a kayak!

Shad is a type of fish described as "the fish that fed the nation's founders". Adult shad weigh between 3 and 8 lb and they have a delicate flavor when cooked. Best yet - there is no limit on the number of Shad an angler can catch.

I'm told that Coon Island (aka JJ Collins Marine Park) in the Multnomah Slough is an excellent place to catch shad. And I'd like to try.

We'll launch from Chapman landing a beautiful park with steep banks and a tricky launch. Then we'll paddle north along the slough for about 2 miles to Coon Island. Once there, we'll try fishing for a few hours.

Exploring Coon island campground is also a possibility for those interested - although the banks of Coon Island are rumored to be steep. We'll figure out where to have lunch when we're hungry.

When we are ready to leave, we'll paddle back south to Chapman landing.

If you plan to fish for shad, you'll need an Oregon fishing license, fishing pole, shad darts (lures) and some sort of method for containing anything you catch (stringer? Fish basket?)

If you haven't already guessed, this is going to be a trip filled with improvisation. Come prepared to be flexible.

Narrative:: Practice your boat handling skills in dynamic water during the incoming tide at the Nehalem River mouth. Depending on who signs up for this L-3 level activity, we can pair up and work on rescues, surfing, rolls, and paddling in and out of current. I will expect those with developed skills to help those with developing skills. Participants should have some experience with self rescue, assisted rescues, holding onto your boat and paddle and waiting for a rescue. If conditions allow, we may paddle outside of the mouth and check out the scenery from offshore. The swell and wind will dictate what we can do that day. Non leaking drysuit, helmet and whistle required. Farmer john and drytop is OK too.
I have not paddled here before and will do some reconnaissance before this event with a similar tide so I can see what's there to play in. It's an adventure, exploring new waters, seeing how currents and features shape what we can do in a small geographic area.

Activity Title:: Manzanita to Short Sands
    Date of Activity:: 6/26/2026
Narrative:: If conditions are favorable for this L-3 paddle, we will launch at North Beach in Manzanita, explore tunnels and rock gardens south of Short Sands. We'll stop at Short Sands for lunch, play in the surf, and then head through an arch just west of the beach.

Plastic boats may be best if you like to get close to the rocks. This is a really pretty area to surf/ paddle in when the swell is not too massive, the day is sunny and the wind is low.
If the conditions do not meet L-3 parameters for "waves, swell, breaking waves and surf" we might be able to use our wheels to walk our boats through an old growth forest to Short Sands and explore nearby features with the protection of the cove. I will monitor the forecast based on the day before. Ideally some strong paddlers can join us and we can best insure a positive experience for the less skilled in launching and landing through surf. Useful skills to have for this paddle: reading waves, bracing, self reentry, rolling, and a willingness to swim to the shore, get back in your boat, and try again.

    Full Name:: Paige Light-Powell
Narrative:: Are you interested in playing in the surf, or paddling on the ocean, but don’t know how to get started? Come join us!

This skills session covers how to launch, land, and paddle safely in surf zones. We’ll cover concepts and techniques for safely traversing a surf zone in a sea kayak. The day will include activities on land and in the water.

The surf zone is a dynamic water environment that requires reflexive bracing. Capsizes are frequent. The session will be presented as "challenge by choice". We will all get wet. Immersion wear is required. Dress appropriately to stay warm, even when wet and on the beach or in the wind. That may mean a hoodie, and gloves, definitely a wet or drysuit.

This session is not intended for paddlers who already have experience playing in and paddling through the surf zone with comfort. If you have never kayaked in the surf, or feel uncertain yet about how to negotiate the surf zone, this is for you! This is appropriate for confident L2 paddlers and L3 paddlers. You should not have any current shoulder or neck injuries.

We’ll start by reviewing strokes and doing some work on shore. Eventually we’ll learn with activities on the ocean-facing beach, and in the surf near shore with and without boats. It is all “challenge by choice”.

The session will be coached Melinda Moree, who is an ACA L4 Open Water Coastal Kayaking instructor. She will be assisted by TOs Paige and David.

    REQUIRED EQUIPMENT:
    • Sea kayak with sealed hatches in the bow and stern and perimeter deck lines in the bow and stern. Not intended for surf-specific kayaks.
    • Properly fitting spray skirt.
    • Well-fitting Helmet suitable for kayaking.
    • Properly fitting Coast Guard approved type III PFD.
    • Kayak paddle that floats. We recommend a euro-blade, but if you are an experienced and devoted Greenland paddler, they can work too.

Narrative:: If conditions are favorable for this L-3 paddle, we will launch at Indian Beach in the Ecola State Park and paddle through rock gardens to find surf to play in south of Ecola Point.
If you haven't been there before use your google earth devices to look at this area.
Plastic boats may be best if you like to get close to the rocks. This is a really pretty area to surf/ paddle in when the swell is not too massive, the day is sunny and the wind is low.
If the conditions do not meet L-3 parameters for "waves, swell, breaking waves and surf" we will just stay at the Nehalem river mouth in the flood current doing surfing. I will monitor the forecast based on the day before. Ideally some strong paddlers can join us and we can best insure a positive experience for the less skilled in launching and landing through surf. Useful skills to have for this paddle: reading waves, bracing or rolling.

Or, we may paddle south past Crab Harbor to the narrow part of the spit, where I'm told we can beach the boats and hike over the dune to see the ocean side of the spit and all the interesting life there. Sunshine Coast

    July 23 - 26, 2026

Paddling days will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday

General registration will open April 9th at 9:30 pm

Trip Organizers who have been approved to lead trips for the Event will be able to register earlier.

OOPS is going back to the Sunshine Coast in BC again in July 2026!

If you have been to this location on our previous trips in 2019 and 2023 you already know what great paddling options are available.

Blessed with relatively warm ocean water, abundant sunshine and beautiful scenery, the area is a paddler's joy, islands and inlets beckon. Seals, geese, eagles and sometimes porpoises and whales can be seen in this beautiful area on the mainland of B.C., just north of Vancouver.

There are many launch locations along a 20 miles stretch of coastline, inlets and harbors. Most of the trips will be Level 2 with limited options for Level 1 trips. There are also some options for Level 3 trips.  All paddles, with the exception of Sechelt Inlet, are ocean events so conditions can change quite a bit from day to day.

In 2023 we were able to offer 3-4 trips options each day and get everyone out on the water and enjoyed great weather as well. There are options for off the water activities and lots of dinning and offsite accommodations available in addition to our reserved sites at Bayside RV Park and Campground in Sechelt.

Narrative:: The Sechelt Inlet is a prime paddling destination. The waters are fairly calm thanks to the geography of the landscape, so you’re unlikely to encounter big waves, as may be possible in the open ocean. Wildlife watchers will be treated to sightings of bald eagles, seals and porpoises, along with a variety of marine life such as starfish and crabs. The deep blue sea gives way to tree lined mountains where no roads go, making for a true back country experience in the wilderness.
We will meet at Porpoise Bay Provincial Park at 8:30, be on the water by 9:30, then follow the coast north, stopping as desired at Mt Richardson Provincial Park beaches. We’ll head towards the First Nations petroglyphs at Nine Mile Beach Returning along the same route back to the take-out.

Narrative:: This is an exploration of the north shoreline of Halfmoon Bay from Coopers Green to Smuggler Cove and return via the South Thormanby shoreline. The shoreline is mostly along the undeveloped Smuggler Cove Marine Provincial Park. The shoreline is a spectacular rock and cove experience and Smuggler Cove is a sparkling gem. The total distance is 10 miles. The South Thormanby shore line requires two crossing, the larger is a half mile, the smaller a third mile. There are three landing locations; Brooks Cove, Smuggler Cove, and Pebbly Beach.

    Route
From Coopers Green to the north Halfmoon Bay shoreline. Explore the shoreline to the Thormanby Island channel then the shoreline to Smuggler Cove. Lunch at the end of Smuggler Cove. Return route across Thormanby Channel then along the island shore to Pebbly Beach then cross the channel to the mainland. Continue along the outward route to Coopers Green.

    Tide and Current
    https://www.tides.gc.ca/en/stations/07830/2026-07-22?tz=PDT&unit=m
During the Sunshine Coast event the tide pattern functionally a single daily low and high. Low tide is at 08:08 at 4.2 feet and flood is to the high at 16:09 at 13.3 feet. The current is from the SE until 16:00 when it goes slack. The current heading is to the northwest through the mainland South Thormanby channel.

    Wind
Three dominant wind patterns are present at Halfmoon Bay (Gemmrich & Pawlowicz 2020) https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/07055900.2020.1735989#d1e181 . Wind from the SE would be in the direction of the flood and lengthen the wave length. Wind from the SW would be on the lee of South Thormanby Island. Wind from the NW would be in opposition to the flood and produce short wave rough water between the Thormanby Channel. AM wind expected to be light with increasing wind or direction change in PM.

In event of unfavorable conditions the route can be shortened by eliminating the Thormanby island crossings or the Smuggler Cove route.

    Trip Logistics
Coppers Green has limited parking. Kayaks and gear are to be unloaded with the vehicles moved to the closest parking and a single vehicle left at the launch site, if required.

    Willamette River

    August 20-22, 2026

General registration opens Thursday April 23rd at 9:30 pm

Trip Organizers who have been approved for the Event will be able to register earlier.

Join OOPS for a three-day, two-night paddle down a beautiful stretch of the Willamette River from Albany to Keizer. We’ll paddle ~15 miles a day with the current and camp along the river (at Luckiamute and Independence).

We’ll meet Thursday morning at the take-out (Keizer), leave our cars and be shuttled with our boats and gear to the put-in (Bryant Park in Albany).

From Hyak, we’ll paddle down-river to Luckimute Landing State Natural Area, camping on the Willamette River right across from the confluence with the Santiam River.
You’ll need to bring your own food, water, and shelter (and have it all fit in your kayak!).

Friday morning we’ll depart downriver, stopping for lunch on a gravel bar. Then we will paddle to and camp at Riverview Park in Independence, Oregon.

We'll enjoy the festival happening that evening (quiet time at 10pm), as well as food carts and pubs. You can also cook your own dinner. Water refills, showers, and food will be available in Independence.

Saturday morning we’ll leave Independence enroute to Keizer Rapids Landing. Our cars will be waiting for our return and we’ll pack up and return to our civilized lives.

This is a great trip for everyone–including people new to kayak camping (stay tuned for a shake-down overnight in early summer). Limited to 20 people.

OOPS Friends and soon to be friends. These meetings are open to anyone interested in OOPS.

August is OOPSO which is short for OOPS outside! Join us at Willamette Park Pavilion located at 1100 12th St., West Linn. This will be an opportunity for hands on practice with Radios, Knots and the Ten Essentials. OOPs will be providing pizza, salad and seltzer waters.

    • Radios - Marty Martinez will be leading radio practice. He will discuss basic communication terms, what to do in an emergency or when you just need to communicate with the rest of your party. If you have a radio, bring it for real-life practice with fellow OOPsters. If you don’t have a radio, we will have them available for you to practice. Plan to be on or near the water for this exercise.
    • Knots - Jon Light-Powell will be demonstrating how to tie knots that you may need to repair your kayaking or when you are out on the water. Bring rope if you have it.
    • Ten Essentials - Mark Neiman Ross will be discussing the Ten Essentials and how to pack them efficiently. Discuss the what, where and why of Ten Essentials. Share stories about the time you had just the right tool to help a fellow kayaker when you are out on the water.

Please RSVP by Monday August 24th so that we can order the right number of pizzas. You are welcome to bring an adult beverage if you choose.

Comments, questions, ideas? Send them our way!

    Orcas Island

    Sept 17 - 21, 2026

Paddling days will be Friday, Saturday and Sunday

General registration opens May 7th, 9:30 pm

Trip Organizers who have been approved to lead trips for the Event will be able to register earlier

Come paddle with us in the lovely and always popular San Juan Islands on Orcas Island, Washington! This year we are camping at a new location: the Four Winds Westward Ho youth camp. Located in Deer Harbor, the property includes one hundred acres of woods, fields, and waterfront. We will be the only group using the property when we are there, and will be renting a house with a kitchen and inside gathering space. There’s a large area for our tents near toilets and showers and a parking area that includes space for small RV’s. The camp is beautiful, quiet, and spacious. Daytime temperatures range in the high 60s, and it gets into the 50s at night.

Costs for the event is $108.00 for on-site OOPS members.

Paddles to and around nearby islands are plentiful. The popular destination of Jones Island takes you through passes and around small islands to a pretty island park with a resident deer herd, sandy beaches, and trails through madrona groves and meadows. Or paddle to the more isolated and protected Yellow Island, owned by The Nature Conservancy, and is home to amazing wildflowers and frolicking seals, where you can hike with a 360-degree view of the San Juans. Take a trip to the many bays and islets of the horseshoe shaped Sucia Island and gaze at the interesting geology and strange rock formations. Paddles from Orcas give you a chance to see jellyfish, seals, and perhaps its namesake whale. Visit Mt. Constitution, rising above Orcas half a mile high, with its fantastic vistas of other San Juan Islands and Mt. Baker in the Cascades. Orcas has excellent pubs, wineries, restaurants, and shops, as well as the oldest pottery studio in the northwest.

Although we will be there in September, out of high season, we do recommend that you book your ferry reservation as soon as you are accepted onto the event. While it is possible to travel without reservations, sometimes there is a long line, which may mean a wait for the next ferry.

OOPS Annual Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Course

    2026 Dates:  Sat Oct 10 and Sun Oct 11, 2026, 9 am - 5:30 pm

2026 Location:  University of Portland, on the banks of the Willamette River

2026 Instructor:  Rae Pickens, Mountain Fix

2026 Cost:  $175 per participant for the first 18 participants

Have you ever wanted to up your game when it comes to first aid?  Every OOPS paddle requires at least one first aid person, and this could be you!  Join us at the 2026 Annual Wilderness First Aid (WFA) Course, Sat Oct 10 and Sun Oct 11, at the  University of Portland.

This fast-paced and interactive two-day course is designed to prepare an outdoors-person with the skills and tools they need to assess and treat an injured person, whether in the woods or on the water, and to call for evacuation when necessary.   Successful participants will earn a two-year certification in Wilderness First Aid and CPR.  Bring your first aid kit if you have one - we will review these.  And bring your lunch, or funds to buy lunch. You won’t need your boat or other gear.

OOPS believes in safety, so the club will cover the first $100 of the course for up to 18 participants.  The total out-of-pocket cost will be $175 for the first 18 participants instead of the usual $275 for a course of this caliber.  Since the course is subsidized up front, it will not be eligible for tuition reimbursement.  As of June 15, there are three seats available.

Here is the link to sign up for the course:
