Activity Title:
Shaw Island Coves and Points Explorations
Date of Activity:
8/24/2025
Narrative:
The paddle will begin at Odlin Park boat launch. After introduction and safety talk the paddle will follow the Lopez shoreline to Flat Point, from there it will cross Upright Channel to Canoe Island, a crossing of 0.3 mile. Approaching Flat Point we will identify Upright Channel Beach Access, a Washington DNR site. The crossing is near slack tide and little current is expected. The paddle will follow the Canoe Island east shore to Shaw Island, then east to Picnic Cove for exploration. Exiting Picnic Cove the paddle will proceed west to Shaw Island County Park for a brake if required. After exploring Indian Cove paddling into Reef Net Bay we will explore the county park lands and Cedar Rock Preserve in Reef Net Bay. The return to Canoe Island will leave from the east shore of Cedar Rock Preserve a distance of 0.6 mile then return to Flat Point and then Odlin Park. Flood currents at the Canoe Island Flat Point channel are expected to be low The total distance is 8 miles. This paddle is an opportunity to explore undeveloped shore lines and public property and to enjoy paddling in the protected bays and coves.
