Registration is closed
  • This trip is limited to members with a wet exit certification (except for level 1 trips when the paddler is not using a spray skirt....if the paddler is wearing a spray skirt on a level 1 paddle, the Wet Exit Certification is REQUIRED).  To successfully register you will need to sign into your OOPS member account, and your account will need to be a member of the "Wet Exit Certified" group if you intend to wear a spray skirt.  Your acceptance is conditional on approval by the Organizer, who may contact you with questions about your skills and equipment.  If the measured water temperature is different enough from that listed below to warrant a change in required immersion protection, the Organizer will contact all participants and the Trips Board member with the update at least a day before the trip.

Activity Title: Willamette Narrows and Beyond a Bit, L2, 5-31-22
Date of Activity: 5/31/2022
Narrative: Are you looking for a relaxing kayak trip as you get back to warm-weather paddling? Join Monte Johnston and I as we paddle round-trip from West Linn’s Willamette Park, heading upstream to “the Narrows” and perhaps a mile or so further. The current should be reasonable in the back channels and the main channel.
This is one of the prettiest sections of the Willamette in the metro area. This will be a relaxed pace paddle so that we can enjoy the scenery and get those kayaking muscles back in action. We’ll poke around the various passages and get out of our boats somewhere for lunch before heading back to Willamette Park. Total river miles will be around six to eight, depending on how much poking we do!
Please be water-ready at 10:00 a.m. Water temperature is approaching 60. Drysuit or Farmer John/Jane wetsuit required. Paddlers should expect to stay with the pod.
Driving: when you reach Willamette Park, turn RIGHT at the bottom of the hill. We will NOT use the boat launch, but the more rustic beach at confluence with the Tualatin River. Bathrooms are available; free parking.
Canoes with flotation and kayaks 12’ and longer are welcome providing that you can maintain a minimum 3 mph paddling speed. No inflatables, please.
Newberg data. Water temp: 58 F; Velocity: 20,000 cfm (slightly above median flow), Gauge ht.: projected about 58 ft. (55-56 ft. at Oregon City above the Falls.) These conditions are closer to “mild” than “wild,” but still, this is not your typical summer low-water mild trip.
