This trip is limited to members with a wet exit certification (except for level 1 trips when the paddler is not using a spray skirt....if the paddler is wearing a spray skirt on a level 1 paddle, the Wet Exit Certification is REQUIRED). To successfully register you will need to sign into your OOPS member account, and your account will need to be a member of the "Wet Exit Certified" group if you intend to wear a spray skirt. Your acceptance is conditional on approval by the Organizer, who may contact you with questions about your skills and equipment. If the measured water temperature is different enough from that listed below to warrant a change in required immersion protection, the Organizer will contact all participants and the Trips Board member with the update at least a day before the trip.
NOTE: Signup is waitlist only.
Narrative: This will be a counterclockwise circuit of a portion of south Puget Sound. We will meet at Boston Harbor Boat Ramp (Washington Discover Pass required). From the boat ramp, we will paddle generally west, then north on the ebb current to Hunter Point. About 10 AM the flood current will help move us toward Hope Island. We will circumnavigate Hope Island, and possibly also paddle around Steamboat Island if the water is high enough to allow paddling across the shallow area under the bridge. Lunch break on Hope Island Then across Squaxin Passage to follow the southwest shore of Squaxin Island. Then cross to the southern tip of Harstine Island, and then out into Dana Passage to ride the flood current back to Boston Harbor. The Boston Harbor Marina has beers on tap, ice cream, and other treats for after the paddle. As usual for a winter trip, bring plenty of layers of clothing. A hot drink and/or lunch is encouraged. A storm cag, long raincoat, or some other garment might come in handy during the lunch break depending on conditions. This is about a 12 or 13 nm trip, depending on exact route. Paddling pace will be brisk, but not a race. On the water by 9 AM. Geared up and ready for safety talk by 8:40 AM. Expect to get off the water around 3 PM, but for sure before dark.
