Activity Title::
Manzanita to Short Sands
Date of Activity::
6/26/2026
Narrative::
If conditions are favorable for this L-3 paddle, we will launch at North Beach in Manzanita, explore tunnels and rock gardens south of Short Sands. We'll stop at Short Sands for lunch, play in the surf, and then head through an arch just west of the beach.
Plastic boats may be best if you like to get close to the rocks. This is a really pretty area to surf/ paddle in when the swell is not too massive, the day is sunny and the wind is low.
If the conditions do not meet L-3 parameters for "waves, swell, breaking waves and surf" we might be able to use our wheels to walk our boats through an old growth forest to Short Sands and explore nearby features with the protection of the cove. I will monitor the forecast based on the day before. Ideally some strong paddlers can join us and we can best insure a positive experience for the less skilled in launching and landing through surf. Useful skills to have for this paddle: reading waves, bracing, self reentry, rolling, and a willingness to swim to the shore, get back in your boat, and try again.

Current information::
There's usually a current running from north to south this time of year. There is also a pretty good rip that runs from North Beach to the point, making the return paddle a bit of a slog.

Swell/Surf size::
Level 3: Waves to 3', breaking waves to 2'
