Registration

  • Active club members, including kayaking professional and lifetime. Provisional acceptance, pending approval by the trip organizer if this is a paddle
  • This trip is limited to members with a wet exit certification (except for level 1 trips when the paddler is not using a spray skirt....if the paddler is wearing a spray skirt on a level 1 paddle, the Wet Exit Certification is REQUIRED).  To successfully register you will need to sign into your OOPS member account, and your account will need to be a member of the "Wet Exit Certified" group if you intend to wear a spray skirt.  Your acceptance is conditional on approval by the Organizer, who may contact you with questions about your skills and equipment.  If the measured water temperature is different enough from that listed below to warrant a change in required immersion protection, the Organizer will contact all participants and the Trips Board member with the update at least a day before the trip.

Activity Title: Orcas Is Event: West Sound Circumnavigation, L2, 9-18-22
Date of Activity: 9/18/2022
Narrative: We'll meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Orcas Ferry Landing where we will drop our boats off and park in the long-term parking up the hill. We’ll have our safety briefing at 10:30 a.m. and launch at 10:45 a.m., or as soon as the ferry that is scheduled to leave at 10:40 has left. We'll follow the Orcas shoreline for a short distance, then make the 0.85 mile crossing to the west side of West Sound. Current will minor in Harney Channel and negligible in the sound. Proceeding up the west shoreline, we’ll visit Victim and Skull Islands, and then follow the east shoreline to Basket Island, near the marina. These three islands are BLM property, so we can go ashore when we want. West Sound Marina is next to Basket Island in case we need to use their services. We’ll continue to follow the east shoreline of the sound until we return to our takeout at the ferry landing. I have not kayaked in West Sound previously, but I’m optimistic that I won’t get lost!
