Comments and Discussion
This trip is limited to members with a wet exit certification (except for level 1 trips when the paddler is not using a spray skirt....if the paddler is wearing a spray skirt on a level 1 paddle, the Wet Exit Certification is REQUIRED). To successfully register you will need to sign into your OOPS member account, and your account will need to be a member of the "Wet Exit Certified" group if you intend to wear a spray skirt. Your acceptance is conditional on approval by the Organizer, who may contact you with questions about your skills and equipment. If the measured water temperature is different enough from that listed below to warrant a change in required immersion protection, the Organizer will contact all participants and the Trips Board member with the update at least a day before the trip.
Please note, not following the cancellation procedures may affect your ability to register for future trips and events.
Cancellations
Already on the Roster
If you register for this event and find that you are unable to attend please cancel on the website or the WA mobile app. Members on the waitlist cannot be added to the roster or notified they are now eligible to attend unless your registration is removed from the trip. To cancel, go to the event registration page on the website and click on "Already Registered". A page will open that will allow you to cancel. If you are using the WA mobile app, select the three bars in the upper left hand corner and choose “Tickets” from the drop down menu. Locate the trip and select “CANCEL” located next to “Member Registration”. It would also be helpful if you notified the primary organizer of your cancellation via text, phone or email.
Notifying the Primary Organizer
The primary organizer’s name can be found in the Narrative of the trip on the website. To e-mail the organizer directly, log into your OOPS account, select "Member Directory" under "Membership," search for the name of the organizer, click on their name, and press the "Send Message" button. If you have their phone number you can text them as well.

Narrative: Late October is a great time to visit Long Island on the Willapa Bay Refuge as there is a several week pause between 2 separate hunting seasons on the Island. October 28th also happens to be a full moon, so we will have a spring tide to give us an extra bit of water and time to play with. Two years ago to this same weekend my wife, Kate, and I took two nights to circumnavigate the island - we didn't see another human the entire trip. We did see some of the few remaining old growth cedars in the interior of the island as well as a glimpse of the resident elk heard from our camp. My plan is to launch from the Refuge Headquarters boat ramp Saturday morning and paddle up the West side of Long Island to near the Smokey Hollow campground (about 3.5 miles) Here we will land, have some lunch, and take a 2 mile round trip hike to a stand of old growth trees. Back on the water we will continue another 7 miles around the north end of the island and make camp at Lewis Slough. Lewis Slough has a picnic table, pit toilet, a couple of short hikes, and good unobstructed views of the surrounding meadows - think Elk here. Bring your binoculars. Sunday morning we will launch as soon as the rising tide allows(10:30?) and paddle South the 5-6 miles back to our put-in Along the way we can explore some of the Kaffee and Baldwins Sloughs as time allows and interest. Please consider: my proposed itinerary is only feasible if we keep to schedule. Know how long you need to get to the put-in, how much time you will need to load your boat for an overnight trip, and your physical limitations - Saturday is a big day. If you haven't camped from your boat before talk with me... I will cancel if significant weather is forecast, but be prepared to camp in rain and overnight temps in the 40's. There is no potable water on the island, bring at least 4 liters for your personal consumption. Don't forget TP. You will likely have to launch/land in mud - consider your footwear.
Please adhere to the following kayak requirements:
14’ or longer
Must have a skeg or rudder
At least 2 bulkheads with sealed compartments front and rear
Perimeter deck lines
