Full Name: Ed Johnson

Narrative: We will use the canoe/kayak launch at the southeast corner of the Newport Marina, about 50yds south of the Rogue Spirts Sunset Bar. Unload your kayak at the launch and park across the street from the bar. Public restrooms are between the bar and the public fish cleaning station. Following our 9:45 am briefing, we will paddle single file out of the marina past the marina breakwaters and into the Yaquina River where we turn right and head upriver with the help of the incoming tide. We’ll stay on the south side of the main ship channel and soon pass the NOAA Marine Operations Center-Pacific on our right. A half mile further we pass the Hatfield Marine Science Center Oregon State University. Continuing and close to shore, we’ll see the Yaquina Bay Estuary Trail. Next, we’ll cross the southern side of Yaquina Bay on our way to Idaho Point. From there we’ll turn south and paddle into King Slough a short way the turn east and paddle towards Yakona Nature Preserve following its shoreline and the main river channel. With permission, will come ashore and listen to a host from the Yakona Nature Preserve tell us about the Preserve. Afterwards we’ll return to our launch by the same route with assistance from the river current and ebb tide. Total paddling distance will be 8-9 miles.

This is a Level 2 trip due to distance, wind potential, and current. Wet exit certification required. The water temperature will be upper 50s deg F. Be sure to have adequate layers of insulation. Air temperature forecast 60L -85H deg F. Bring food and water. Extra & spare set of clothing, in dry bags.
