This trip is limited to members with a wet exit certification (except for level 1 trips when the paddler is not using a spray skirt....if the paddler is wearing a spray skirt on a level 1 paddle, the Wet Exit Certification is REQUIRED). To successfully register you will need to sign into your OOPS member account, and your account will need to be a member of the "Wet Exit Certified" group if you intend to wear a spray skirt. Your acceptance is conditional on approval by the Organizer, who may contact you with questions about your skills and equipment. If the measured water temperature is different enough from that listed below to warrant a change in required immersion protection, the Organizer will contact all participants and the Trips Board member with the update at least a day before the trip
Full Name:Joe Howell Activity Title: Rooster Rock to Cape Horn RT, L2 8-27-21 Date of Activity: 8/27/2021 Narrative: Join Dave Smith and me for a round-trip paddle from Rooster Rock State Park upriver alongside Sand Island and crossing the Columbia to Cape Horn. We will launch from the path down from the parking lot closer to the entrance. Enter the park and turn left. Pass the first bathroom on your right and turn right into that parking lot. Drive straight toward the water and park near the path.Total paddling distance will be about 8-10 miles. We’ll head upriver on the last of the incoming tide and decide a good place to cross the main channel of the Columbia on our way to Cape Horn. Wind Friday is projected to be 3-5 mph with temps in the mid 60's when we launch and climbing to 80 or so during the paddle. Please arrive by 9:30 a.m. and be ready to launch at 10:00 a.m. We should be off the water by 3:00 p.m. Restrooms available, but maybe only by the main entrance. State park permit or fee required. The water should be around 70 degrees; no immersion wear is required, but a layer of neoprene is recommended. This level two trip is suitable for hard shell boats capable of maintaining 2-3 mph. We will cross the river in a tight formation and try not to spread out too much throughout the trip. If you like to wander off on your own, this is not the trip for you. Bring a lunch, water, hat, sunscreen, and whatever else you need to enjoy a nice day on the water. The views of Cape Horn's rocks and waterfalls are pretty cool to see from the water, so it should be a pleasant adventure.
