This trip is limited to members with a wet exit certification (except for level 1 trips when the paddler is not using a spray skirt....if the paddler is wearing a spray skirt on a level 1 paddle, the Wet Exit Certification is REQUIRED). To successfully register you will need to sign into your OOPS member account, and your account will need to be a member of the "Wet Exit Certified" group if you intend to wear a spray skirt. Your acceptance is conditional on approval by the Organizer, who may contact you with questions about your skills and equipment. If the measured water temperature is different enough from that listed below to warrant a change in required immersion protection, the Organizer will contact all participants and the Trips Board member with the update at least a day before the trip.
Full Name:Chris Mayou Activity Title: Scappoose Bay to the Columbia River, L2 8-29-21 Date of Activity: 8/29/2021 Narrative: Where can a person kayak and avoid the crazy crowds that a warm August weekend presents? I’m hopeful that Scappoose Bay Marina to Sand Island and/or the lighthouse are a good choice. The nine-mile trip offers backwater sloughs and views across the Columbia and of Mt. St. Helens. The safety chat will begin at 11:00 a.m. We’ll plan on a leisurely stay on Sand Island or the beach by the Warrior Rock Lighthouse, or maybe both. Wind may be a factor in that decision. Then we’ll head back upriver around 3:00 p.m., arriving around 5:00 p.m. We may have a bit of wind, so you need to be comfortable paddling in 10-12 mph wind and some waves for this trip. This level two trip is suitable for boats 12 ft. and longer; no inflatables, please. Plan to arrive by 10:15 a.m. to allow time to unload, park, and be ready to be water-ready by 10:30 p.m. There are vault toilets on Sand Island. There are bushes by the lighthouse! There are public restrooms at the marina parking area, and a day-use fee for parking (credit card or cash). The marina is easy to find. Take Hwy. 30 to Warren, turn east on Bennett Rd. at milepost 25.8, then an immediate left on Old Portland Road. You’ll see the Scappoose Bay Paddling Center and the marina.
