Activity Title: Group Dynamics Class—Maintain an Effective Pod Date of Activity: 8/1/2021 Narrative: OOPS trips are group trips. Practice skills which promote safer and more successful trips for all participants while paddling at the Cedaroak lagoon and upstream of it. Please bring a tow belt if you have one. There will be optional self- and assisted-rescue practice at the end of the class. What skills contribute to group dynamics? Consider these scenarios: · A fellow kayaker asks you to get their hat out of their back hatch. You awkwardly maneuver, trying to get alongside their boat. There are ways to make this easier. · Your group needs to do an open crossing. The Organizer asks paddlers to get into a diamond formation for the crossing. Learn what that is and how to do it, along with other formations. · Trip participants are often asked to help by being a lead, sweep, inside rail or outside rail. Say what? We'll learn about and practice those. · Another paddler is hurt or tired and needs a tow. We’ll practice towing both with and without a towbelt. · Are there some tricks to better communication on the water? Yes there are. We’ll practice some. We'll take a short snack and bio-break, but we should be done by noon or 12:30, so there will be no lunch break. Note: this is not at rescue class.
