Full Name:: Jency's third mentored paddle Activity Title:: Jency's third mentored paddle - Scappoose to Sand Island and back! L2 Date of Activity:: 8/30/2026 Narrative:: Enjoy a nice paddle, wildlife, pictures, & lunch! Starting at Scappoose Bay, this hopes to be a leisurely paddle. Scappoose bay is home to many creatures like Blue Heron, Osprey, Egret, Cormorant, & Bald Eagles. We will be paddling out with the tide on the left side of the bay, toward Sand Island. This area is very tidal and there might be sightings of Bald Eagles and Herons – maybe other fun creatures! We will go to the confluence of Scappoose Bay and the Multnomah Channel, then on to the confluence of Multnomah Channel & the Columbia River. From there our intention is to paddle counterclockwise around the north side of Sand Island. Going around Sand Island will be very wind dependent and we will have some discussion about the next best step. From Sand Island we will cross the Columbia and head for the beach at the Lighthouse for lunch or a snack. After lunch we will head back to our put in. There is a ramp to get from the parking lot to the water. We can share the work to get the boats down there and/or you can bring wheels if you want. Parking Fee: $10.00. Machine will take cards. Parking is enforced by the county. It can be a very mild trip, however, the wind can alter the conditions here very quickly. If we travel the east side of Sand Island, we will be in the Columbia River. We will need to pay attention to the wind and the shipping channel. The wind fetching the waves on far side of the island must be a consideration. The trip may be shortened at different stages.
