Trips and Classes

This section is designed to let you know about some of the activities that are available through OOPS. Details of the trips and classes are provided in the OOPS monthly newsletter called "The GAM", which is mailed to members monthly.

Upcoming Trips  

Note: Participants on club trips must wear or have readily accessible cold-water protective clothing whenever the water temperature is expected to be below 50 degrees. Trip leaders specify the type of clothing and whether or not it must be worn. Contact the trip leader for details. Contacts by email are not necessary, but are preferred. Please include your current phone number, and email address to make it easier for the leaders to get back to you.

  • April 19, 20 and May 2-4
    Introduction to Kayak Camping
    OOPS Rating Level: 2
    Group Size Limit: 12 (No more than 12 total for each of the two first sessions.)

    A three part class for OOPSters uncertain how to get started in kayak touring.

  • Tarpology, Leave No Trace, and Kayak First Aid Topics, April 19, Midland Park: Campsite selection, use of tarps to shelter tents and communal areas from winds, rain, and sun. We'll work in teams of 2 or 3. Food hangs are demonstrated. Additionally, Marcia Medler, OOPSter and an RN with a background in Wilderness Medicine, a certified Leave No Trace (LNT) instructor, and certified American Heart Association first aid instructor, will present LNT principles and topics in kayaking first aid. (Note: No first aid certification is earned at this class.) You'll in advance receive a pamphlet with some of the knots we'll use.
  • Pick and Pack Gear, April 20, West Linn Willamette Park: Gear and food selection and packing. Participants will receive a pamphlet prior to this section. This part includes paddling loaded kayaks for 2-3 hours.
  • Gull Island Campout, May 2-4: Ideally two nights on the island applying what we learned as well as paddling and birding or fishing in the area. Every effort will be made to accommodate those who can only stay one night or who wish to attend SSTIKS at Skamakowa on Sunday the 4th.

    Smith and Bybee Lakes
    OOPS Rating Level: 1
    Group Size Limit: 8

    Smith and Bybee Lakes is a 2,000 acre wetland in North Portland, in the heart of the industrial area. This a wonderful place for beginner paddler, with abundance of wildlife, close to Portlander and safe place for paddler.

  • May 23-26, 2008
    Mayne Island
    OOPS Rating Level: 2 or higher (depending on the trips you select)

    This is a multi-day, multi-trip event centered at Mayne Island Eco-Camping in the Gulf Islands, British Columbia. A sign-up form is posted in the trips section of the club website. The GAM announcement describes this trip in depth. Cold water immersion clothing is requited.

  • May 25, 2008
    Cullaby Lake
    OOPS Rating Level: 1
    Group Size Limit: 8

    Cullaby Lake is between Warrenton and Seaside, OR. Its about 5 miles around the perimeter, and offers a gentle paddle along the shoreline with some houses and parks on the west side and relatively undeveloped land along the east shore. We will take a tour of the lake, stopping along the way to see wildlife and eat lunch at one of the parks.

    Portland Bridges Paddle
    OOPS Rating Level: 2
    Distancet: 10 Miles

    Come joing our fifth annual Portland Bridge Tour. Paddle under all ten bridges from Sellwood to St. John. Learn interesting history and facts about the bridges. We will have a test at the St. Johns' Pub after the paddle.

    Hanford Reach
    OOPS Rating Level: 2
    Group Size Limit:
    Distance: 20 miles (downstream)

    The trip starts below Priest Rapids Dam at the Vernita Bridge. You'll paddle 20 miles through the last free-flowing, non-tidal stretch of the Columbia River. History is dramatic, with the Hanford Reservation on one side and 300 foot tall white bluffs on the other. Wildlife is abundant. Lunch is at a beach overlooking the cliffs. Take out is at White Bluff boat launch. This is a significant drive, so car pooling is encouraged.

    Netarts Bay
    OOPS Rating Level: 3
    Group Size Limit: 6

    Netarts is a wonderful place to play in the waves on an incoming tide. If we can get outside without going through the outer break, we will go see Three Arch Rocks (maintaining the seabird buffer zone). As the tide fills in, we will come in and play in the waves around the mouth of the bay. This trip can be paddled at level three by staying out of the breaking waves, or at level four by playing in the surf.

    Mayer State Park to Klickitat River and Return
    OOPS Rating Level: 2+
    Group Size Limit: TBD
    Cost (If applicable): n/a

    Launch from Mayer State Park at Milepost 74 on I-84, paddle east for approx. 1 mile, cross the Columbia river to the Washington side, and travel west to the Klickitat river.

    Travel up the river for approx. a mile to the first set of rapids, and stop for lunch.

    Head back down the river to the mouth, and cross back to the Oregon side, and head east to the launch. Distance: 10-12 miles

  • September 18- 21, 2008 (Thursday - Sunday)
    Southern Coastal Oregon Ocean Paddle in September (SCOOPS)
    Location: Bullard's Beach State Park (near Bandon, Oregon)

    OOPTIKS 2008 at Skamokawa
    Location: Skamokawa, WA
    OOPS Rating Level: 1

    Join us for the 3rd annual OOPS-sponsored Traditional Inuit Kayak Symposium on Sunday, May 4 from 9am to 4pm. This is a day of on the water classes. Bring your own Greenland paddle or borrow one of ours. We have put together a team of ten instructors from around the northwest, all of whom teach at SSTIKS, to provide classes in strokes and maneuvers, rolling, rescues, games, and new this year harpoon throwing. Whether you are brand new to kayaking or are have years of experience, OOPTIKS has classes and coaching for all skill levels. Pre-registration required, total enrollment limited to 25 to ensure small class sizes.

Training Funding Assistance Policy

The Training Funding Assistance Policy was adopted last year as a way to encourage active trip leaders to improve their skills and to reward them for contributing to OOPS. Below are some classes that would apply under this policy. This is not a complete list by any means - it is only to show some examples and to remind the club that this opportunity is available.
