October 1 Personal Skill Development Bob Baltazar/Education Coordinator
This Fall, I am volunteering to offer paddling skill development coaching sessions for small groups of 1-4 OOPS members. I am working on becoming a Level 2 Coach for the British Canoe Union (BCU) ; these sessions would help me develop coaching skills while I would help you either gain new skills or refine your current skill set. Classes can cover forward/backward paddling, maneuvering strokes, bracing, beginning rolling, rescues, greenland paddling, and/or basic canoeing skills (a new requirement for BCU 2 Star Assessments). These sessions will mainly be conducted in calm waters or pool sessions.

Call or email me if you want to improve your skills, if you want to get ready for an upcoming assessment, or if you just want to have more fun on the water. We will then determine if I can help you and work out an agreeable time. October through December only.

Training Funding Assistance Policy

The Training Funding Assistance Policy was adopted last year as a way to encourage active trip leaders to improve their skills and to reward them for contributing to OOPS. Below are some classes that would apply under this policy. This is not a complete list by any means - it is only to show some examples and to remind the club that this opportunity is available. If you are interested in utilizing the club resources to assist in advancing your own skills through professional development, please review the policy online in the Documents section.

  • 3-day Leadership Workshop, 8-1 thru 3, Columbia River Kayaking
  • October 11-12 Coastal Paddling with Nigel Foster, Portland Kayak Co. (10% discount for OOPS members)
  • October (Dates still TBD): American Canoe Association Instructor Development Workshop (IDW) and Instructor Certification Exam (ICE). Two different options, one is Andree Hurley at Kayak Instruction Excellence and the other is Tim Mattson.

As additional trips and classes are scheduled details will be posted on this page and the OOPS listserv.  Guests are welcome on many trips.

Only current OOPS members may sign up for OOPS classes.  Processing new or renewing memberships can take three to four weeks.
