About The Oregon Ocean Paddling Society

OOPS is dedicated to fostering the development and enjoyment of sea kayaking. OOPS activities are organized and led by volunteer members. Our paddling activities are at all levels from flat water to surf, though the majority of our paddling consists of day trips on lakes and rivers in the Portland area. Here are some of our major activities:

  • Paddling trips in the Portland area and other Northwest areas.
  • Paddling and leadership skills classes.
  • Monthly program speakers.
  • The GAM, our monthly newsletter, with information on club activities and articles relating to sea kayaking.

Mission and Vision Statements

  • Mission: OOPS is the Premier kayaking club of the northwest.
  • Vision: We offer high quality trips and classes to all levels of paddlers. We are vigilant in Safety. We have fun paddling the ocean, rivers, and lakes. We are good stewards of our paddling environment.

Local Paddles

We publish in advance a schedule of paddling trips for the coming month. These trips are proposed and led by members. Most of these trips are in the Portland area and do not require a high level of paddling skill. Some trips are planned as overnight trips. All trips carry designated ratings for required skill and endurance to assure that all participants have the necessary skills for the trip to be successful and enjoyable. We generally have at least one trip each weekend during the warmer months, with less frequent trips in the winter months. Members may also get together for informal trips by using the club’s email list serve.

Overnight Trips

In addition to day-paddles, some of our trips include overnight camping. OOPS also has several traditional weekend trips that are very popular. These trips provide opportunities to share exquisite paddling experiences in areas we don’t get to all the time. Currently, we have the following annual weekend or longer trips:

  • Mayne Island in the Canadian Gulf Islands (Memorial Day weekend)
  • Sechelt on the British Columbia Sunshine Coast (late July)
  • Waldo Lake (August)
  • The Skamokawa weekend and salmon bake (late September)
  • Lake Billy Chinook (October)

Each of these trips has a coordinator to manage signups, reservations and other logistics, as well as planning of trips.

Classes

OOPS members instruct classes in paddling, trip planning and leadership. Classes may be as short as one half day, or may include many day sessions. Here is a list of some classes we have offered:

  • Rescue skills
  • Paddling in currents
  • Surf
  • Bracing
  • Navigation
  • GPS
  • Trip planning
  • Rolling

Programs

Our monthly meetings consist of a short business meeting followed by a speaker. Program topics are varied. Click here for information on our upcoming meeting.

Safety

OOPS has a strong focus on safety. We carry liability insurance on all our official on-water activities. We require trip leaders and participants to satisfy club safety requirements. All trips have must have a member certified in first aid and CPR. Although the club makes an effort to foster a safe paddling environment, each participant is responsible for his or her own safety.

The OOPS Board and Contact Information

Club activities are coordinated by a board of 9 members which meets monthly. Interested in becoming a volunteer OOPS board member? Read the OOPS Board job descriptions here.
